Highlights of “Standards-Based Grading”
- Remove student behaviors (effort, participation, adherence to class rules) from grades; only include achievement.
- Do not reduce grades on work that is submitted “late.”
- Eliminate extra credit and bonus points.
- Do not punish academic dishonesty with reduced grades; apply other consequences and reassess to determine actual level of achievement.
- Do not include attendance as part of an academic grade.
- Use only individual achievement evidence. Do not include group scores.
- Provide clear descriptions of achievement expectations.
- Compare each student’s performance to pre-set standards.
- Do not assign grades based on a student’s performance compared to other students.
