Standards Based Grading

Highlights of “Standards-Based Grading”

  • Remove student behaviors (effort, participation, adherence to class rules) from grades; only include achievement.
  • Do not reduce grades on work that is submitted “late.”
  • Eliminate extra credit and bonus points.
  • Do not punish academic dishonesty with reduced grades; apply other consequences and reassess to determine actual level of achievement.
  • Do not include attendance as part of an academic grade.
  • Use only individual achievement evidence. Do not include group scores.
  • Provide clear descriptions of achievement expectations.
  • Compare each student’s performance to pre-set standards.
  • Do not assign grades based on a student’s performance compared to other students.
