Mr. Steve Roundy was my art teacher at Kaysville Junior High School from 1979-1982. His classes were my first “formal” art classes of my life. I learned many valuable things from him such as drawing from life, value, perspective, and creativity. Perhaps the high point of my junior high career was placing in his “Football Art Poster Contest” and then being allowed to order the professional NFL poster of my choice as one of the winners. I chose the poster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (my favorite NFL team then and now). That day was immortalized by a photo in the 1981 KJHS Yearbook.
However, the most important thing I took from his class was a greater interest and desire to become a better artist. His artwork and classroom demonstrations both awed and inspired me.
I reconnected with Mr. Roundy after becoming an art teacher myself, and occasionally “talked shop” with him over the years. At one point, he generously offered me the various drawings, samples, and materials that he had accumulated during more than thirty years of teaching. I enthusiastically accepted, and was amazed that some of the gourds and Indian corn from the late 1970’s have survived to the present day.
Below are some of Mr. Roundy’s sample drawings that I’ve been able to photograph or scan. I was impressed by them when I was his student, and still am today; his skill and creativity still inspires me after all these years. It’s important to me that they be displayed, and be used to inspire other art students that aren’t in his classes. I hope you’ll enjoy them also.
Mr. Roundy retired in 2012, but continues to produce works of art that portrays his unique style and way of seeing the world. He currently makes hand-sculpted porcelain whistles, which can be seen at http://www.windinyourfacewhistles.com/ You can see his business card and one of his whistles at the bottom of this page.
