Detailed Explanations and Descriptions
Pencil: Some students are under the impression that for them to do great artwork they will need special pencils. It's a misconception. For everything we'll do in junior high, a standard yellow school pencil (No. 2/HB) will be fine. However, at times it will also be nice to have a mechanical pencil (.5mm or .7mm) of HB lead also.
Eraser: Many erasers are available and most will be fine, but I'd recommend a
white vinyl eraser. The one made by Staedtler is nice, as is a "Magic
Rub" eraser. Sometimes it's good to also have a Clic Eraser. Pentel
makes one that is not too expensive. Advanced students in the Art 2 and
Commercial Art classes will want a kneaded eraser. I recommend the
Sanford Kneaded Rubber Eraser. However, this eraser can be distracting
to some students as the temptation to make small eraser sculptures,
instead of working on their assignment, can be hard to resist.
Ruler: Please get one that is plastic, metal, or wood, but solid and
relatively inflexible. 12 inches (no smaller or larger) is perfect for
Art 1 students, while 18 inches is the size Art 2 and Commercial Art
students will need. We will do everything in inches, so a ruler with
millimeters or picas is unnecessary.
Sharpener: Some type
of personal sharpener with a canister to catch the shavings is
necessary. Please avoid the battery-powered versions, as the noise they
produce can be quite distracting.
Colored Pencils: Crayola
is a common brand, and I've found it to be of very good quality. My personal preference is for the standard, wooden Crayola colored pencil. However, Crayola also has a colored pencil product known as "Twistables,"
and I think they are fine for beginning students. This type of colored pencil eliminates the need
to sharpen, and avoids the frustration and time wasting of frequently
broken leads in sharpeners. They come in packs of 12, 18, and 30. The 12
pack is readily available, the larger sets are more difficult to find,
but the more colored pencils a student has, the easier their life will
be. Avoid RoseArt, any generic brands, and any colored pencil that touts
itself as "erasable." Advanced students will want the standard, wooden Crayola colored pencil, and the set of 50 is a real bargain. If the parents' pockets are deep, there may be interest in the more
expensive, professional-level Prismacolor brand.
Markers: Crayola Broad Tip Markers are
the most common and work quite well. Please get the 10 or 12 pack, and avoid
the fine tip markers. They run out of ink too quickly, and the fine tip
will unnecessarily increase the amount of time an assignment requires.
Inking Pen: A low quality, low cost inking pen will be provided to each student at
no charge, but for those looking for better results I recommend the
black ink Pigma Micron Technical Pen. They come in various thicknesses
and for general use the 03 (.35mm) is fine.
Art Transport and Storage: Art 1 students will be provided with an Art Box at no charge. This
convenient item should be used to carry and store all relevant
materials, supplies, and assignments to and from their class. Art 2 and
Commercial Art students will be provided with a "Red Wallet" portfolio
which should be used to transport assignments to and from school. Art 2
and Commercial Art students should keep other supplies and materials in
their Art Locker.
